Discovering respiratory allergy health triggers and responses can make life easier for many people. Over 7% of the U.S. population deals with allergies serious enough to seek medical treatment and many more deal with them on a minor, annoying level. What are some common triggers and ways of responding for better results?

Common symptoms of respiratory allergies are:

  • nasal congestion 
  • runny or dripping nose
  • sneezing
  • difficulty breathing while trying to sleep
  • loss of sense of smell
  • coughing
  • headache
  • nasal itching
  • puffy or red eyes
Respiratory allergies can cause extra mucous. This mucous is often swallowed which can cause digestive issues. These symptoms may occur at a particular time of the year or can occur continuously.
  • Some allergies can be traced back to the nutrition of the mother during pregnancy. There is some evidence that the higher a pregnant mother’s vitamin D intake from food during pregnancy, the lower the risk her child would suffer with allergies and asthma. Food sources of natural vitamin D are fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, or cod. The yolks of eggs are another good food source. Of course, many commercial foods are fortified with vitamin D but that is not necessarily the best source… usually D2 and not easily utilized by the body. Supplemental vitamin D should be the natural form D3 as it is better absorbed by the body.
  • Allergies-Vacuum cleanerThere has been some research that indicates modern hygiene could be a contributing factor to hay fever, asthma, and allergies. It seems that those who have or have had infections associated with poor hygiene or those raised on a farm have a lower incidence of allergies. Increased exposure to germs early in life may affect the immune system in decreasing the risk of allergies later in life. Now this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t practice common sense hygiene for our young families, it’s just not necessary to go overboard with cleanliness and keep your children in a bubble.
  • Frequency of exposure to truck traffic has been associated with being more susceptible to wheezing and allergic reactions.  Car air conditioners are also known to trigger allergy symptoms in some people. I personally have noticed that my nose will often become slightly stuffy when riding or driving in a car with the air conditioner on.
  • Common triggers of respiratory allergies are pollens, dust, mold, dust mites, pet saliva, and pet hair. Certain foods such as peas, beans, coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, corn, banana, margarine, powered foods like garlic powder, and additives such as MSG or sodium benzoate can cause allergy reactions. Eliminating these items from your life can be beneficial and are often necessary to combat allergic reactions but once again… it’s no fun living in a bubble.
Most people who suffer from allergies have poorly functioning adrenals. The adrenals release hormones when you are under stress, help balance blood sugar, and helps your body handle flows of energy. They are often referred to as your ‘fight or flight’ glands that produce the energy to fight or run away when facing a stressful situation. Excessive stress or even excess stimulants such as caffeine can bring about some level of adrenal exhaustion. Complete adrenal exhaustion can be fatal.
Proper and adequate nutrition are needed to support adrenal function. Nutrients important for good adrenal health include protein, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Refined sugars are particularly damaging to healthy adrenal function.
Supplementation of nutrients is usually required to build the proper support necessary to combat adrenal exhaustion, as well as respiratory allergies. Below are some supplements that may be beneficial to those suffering from allergies and/or asthma.
  • Essential fatty acids: A grain concentrate supplement of whole-food blending of extracts from wheat, rice and soy (no gluten and from grains without GMO) with essential nutrients such as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids to assure cell function and rebuilding from adrenal exhaustion. Salmon oil supplements help reduce inflammation throughout the body thus reducing inflammation in the respiratory system.
  • Protein: Daily supplementation with a balanced ratio of protein, carbohydrates, and fiber that supplies all 22 amino acids assures the body of having the building blocks for a healthy immune system and adrenal function. The consumption of nuts is beneficial in reducing wheezing for those who have asthma symptoms.
  • Allergies-FlavonoidFruitVeggiesAntioxidants: Supplementation with full spectrum carotenoids and flavonoids offers significant protection against the development of allergic conditions. Flavonoids have been shown to reduce the severity of allergic response to birch pollen so no doubt will offer reduction of allergic response to other pollens. An interesting note is that the sooner prior to the allergy season, the flavonoid supplementation is started the more effective it is. Lycopene, a red carotenoid is very effective in neutralizing free radical oxygen thus reducing allergic inflammation in the lungs and throughout the body… it may protect against asthma. An important fact: different carotenoids perform different functions and some rely on the presence of others to work so we need to have a well rounded intake of the entire family of carotenoids.
  • Vitamins: Supplementation with a water miscible vitamin A enhances the health of the mucus membranes. Personally, I tend to suffer from a dry, stuffy nose sometimes at night so each morning and evening, I puncture a vitamin A capsule, dab a small amount in each nostril, and swallow the remainder of the capsule. It definitely adds moisture and reduces the dry, stuffy nose.
  • Vitamin C has been shown to relieve hay fewer symptoms by 88%. Vitamin C also helps prevent the damage of histamines from antihistamine medicines used by allergy sufferers.
  • Vitamin E, particularly the natural form of gamma tocopherol, has been known to reduce allergy symptoms.
  • Minerals: Supplementation with magnesium 3 times daily for 1 month has been shown to reduce allergy symptoms. Zinc deficiency has been found in people with allergies and asthma.
  • Children who use a good multivitamin prior to 4 years of age have a decreased risk for allergic responses to both foods and inhalants.
  • Another quick suggestion if you suffer from digestive issues. Addressing digestive problems will ease many allergy problems especially those associated with foods. Digestive aids in the form of natural hydrochloric acid, plant sourced enzymes, and probiotics are very important when dealing with food allergies.
  • There are also herbal alternatives that can relieve sinus discomfort and lung respiratory discomfort.

There is absolutely no reason a person should suffer needlessly from allergies or asthma.

I learned a lot from your post as regards allergies. I still have a question as regards pressure allergies. My mom has been suffering from it for a long time now and it's not food induced. Can an increased immunity can help. Thank you

Yes, an increased immunity can definitely help. I would suggest a diet and supplement program to build up the immune system. A compromised immune system opens the door to allergies of every time. You mentioned pressure allergies? Are you referring to sinus related allergies?

Very informative post. I had not idea what adrenals were. I have really bad allergies to dust and pollen. The only time I have a moment where I can breath properly is when it is cold outside lol but then I get a runny nose from it (I can't win).

Oh, so sorry to hear that you and your son suffer from allergies. Please contact me so we can get you on a program of improving your immune systems so the allergies will not be so…. severe. Your life will be so much improved. Remember, if you do not take the right steps, they will most likely get worse as the years go by. There are long terms side effects from over use of allergy meds.

I am sorry to hear that your kids suffer with allergic rhinitis. Typically allergic rhinitis symptoms appear because of a sensitized immune system. I do not know the ages of your children? If they are old enough to swallow pills I would high suggest they start taking NeoLife ProVitality+ right away to build up their immune system. What great information! I find I can't eat nuts during the day, so I have started putting them in my breakfast cereal (yes I still eat cereal…Cheerios in ther summer and Oatmeal in the winter!). No problems digesting them this way.

What kind of nuts do you put in your cereal that you cannot eat during the day? I am curious? If I may, I would like to suggest you try our NeoLife Shake for breakfast. I have a weird allergy and I am not exactly sure what causes it. I sneeze quite a bit and wake up in the mornins with itchy throat. It is ever since I moved to TX 8 years ago.This is great ino that will help me identify what the triggers really could be and how to treat

Sneezing and an itchy throat sounds like an allergy from something growing in your area of TX. I would suggest our NeoLife ProVitality+ to give your immune system a boost. Great inforamtion on allergies. We often forget of all the things our bodies have to endure on a daily basis. Knowing what is happening around us and well as what we are putting into our bodies is so important. Being well informed is a great way to begin. All my life I had seasonal allergies. They disappeared. The only thing I can attribute to it has been I eat better. Occassionally I still take an allergy pill but its been over a year since a cold. Coming from someone who had upper respitory illness every year of her life. After reading your most informative post have to say Ive made changes that are paying off.

When I read about people having allergies, I am always so thankful that nobody in my family has an allergy. My son had a milk allergy that he overcame, but for the rest he is fine now. It really seems that allergies are on the rise for a large segment of our population. It's valuable to learn what causes allergic reactions and how to combat them naturally!
I'm fortunate to not have allergies, that I'm aware of… and my children don't have allergies either. My parents raised us primarily without sugar. i remember if we got our chores done for the whole week, on Saturdays we could have one piece of gum!
I raised my children in a similar way, so I wonder, now, if that is what has helped keep us all pretty much healthy…
I always learn so much from your articles and Facebook updates, Pat….I thank you for that! I need the reminders to eat healthy!!!

You are so fortunate to have been raised to not have much sugar and then passed that on to your children. That could very possibly have had an impact on the fact that you nor your children have allergies.
My mother did not allow candy in the house except for a small amount at Christmas time but we did have dessert at least once a day.. of course, it was homemade dessert so didn’t have all the corn syrup and additives store bought dessert has. I never had any issues with allergies until later in life and even now they are not bad.. just an occasional stuffy nose when I am trying to sleep.
We are exposed to so many unnatural things even when we do our very best to eat healthy, etc. I recall when I used to own a fabric store and we would get a new shipment of fabric in… and open the package, there would be a terrible odor. At the time I didn’t realize how many fabrics are treated & processed with and from chemicals.
