Mama’s Cancer Only 3 Months To Live; Chemo, Super Fruits, Faith

The role of Chemo, Super Fruits, and Faith in Cancer

Mama’s stage 4 lung cancer had been inactive for 18 months. November 2013, her oncologist gave us the news that it was once again active and Mama had approximately 3 months to live. What should we do now?

The oncologist gave 2 options:

  1. Do no more treatments, call hospice and make her as comfortable as possible for the next 3 months.
  2. Try a more aggressive intravenous chemo treatment that might slow the cancers growth. This option would maybe give her another 7 to 9 months, at the most a year. No guarantees.

My 2 brothers and I were on the phone trying to make a decision when Mama told us she wanted to do the chemo. That settled that!

With that settled, what would be the results if Mama drank 60 ounces of pomegranate juice every day? Oh, but that would be too much sugar. We all know that cancer feeds on sugar.

Cancer-SuperFoodsHow about if we tripled the ‘Super Fruit’ supplement she had been drinking?

  • It is low-glycemic (sugar) and made from a special group of foods with nutrients called polyphenols.
  • Science and research has shown amazing health benefits to the nutrients in this ‘Super Fruit’ supplement.
  • Based on ounce to ounce comparisons it supplies
  • 20 times the punicalagins (potent anti-oxidants) of fresh pomegranate juice
  • 5 to 10 times the resveratol of fine red wine
  • 7 times the antioxidant power of ripe, red tomatoes
  • 6 times the alpha-lipoic acid of fresh spinach

Eating or juicing those amounts of fruits and veggies will not do it because of the high amount of sugar.

The more aggressive intravenous chemo required a surgically installed port in Mama’s upper chest as her 93 year old veins would not tolerate the IV’s and blood tests. That was a source of discomfort for her but she got through it with nothing stronger than a few over-the-counter pain relievers like Aleve.

The first 2 rounds of chemo did not accomplish the goal of slowing the cancer’s growth. It slowed some but some grew more. That meant a more aggressive chemo treatment. I was not happy about this but it was Mama’s choice to continue. She was not ready to give up.

Three months had already passed when Mama started the more aggressive treatments. She had 1 chemo treatment per week for 3 weeks, a week off; and then 3 more treatments. At that point the oncologist decided she was doing so well, we should do another round of 6 more chemo treatments.

Typical side effects of chemo can be tough on any one at any age. Yet through all this, Mama’s blood work always came back excellent with her red/white blood cell count perfect. It was not until she was into the second set of 6 chemo treatments that her iron count was slightly low. A prescription for B12 did not seem to help. We started her back on a desiccated liver supplement. After only a couple days her iron count was back to normal.

Did the chemo work?

  • It decreased her appetite
  • It made her tired and weak
  • She slept more
  • It gave her brain fog
  • The cancer was still there but showed to be 100% inactive – great news!

Mama has never ceased to amaze her oncologist with the outstanding results of blood work during chemo and her outstanding stamina.

Cancer-Mama-familyWas it worth it?

Mama is still with us 9 months later, so, yes! The chemo definitely accelerated the aging process but she is still able to enjoy life. Her attitude has been amazing throughout this entire journey with cancer. When I ask her how she is feeling, it is always “Just fine!” Her faith and trust in God has helped her accept each day and be thankful for it.

Have you read “Mama’s Cancer Journey – Prayer, Supplements, and/or Medicine?” I wrote that blog 2 years ago, July 2012. It will give you a little background for this blog.

About a year ago, August 2013, Mama started having trouble swallowing her supplements. At that time we made as many changes to liquid as possible and had to accept the fact that she might not be able to stay on such an extensive supplement program. This was probably a combination of the cancer drug (really a low dose chemo) she was on and the aging process.

Often during the aging process, our swallowing reflex is not as good as it once was. This often causes more of a gagging reflex. I was not happy about the decrease in supplements as I believed they were a huge contributing factor of her ability to cope with the stage 4 lung cancer.

It is my belief that the decrease in supplementation last August may have contributed to the cancer becoming more aggressive in October – just 2 months later. After receiving the results of the PET scan in October I suggested 3 servings per day of the liquid ‘super fruit’ as well as the liquid aloe-vera supplement to aid digestion.

These 2 products were a constant in Mama’s diet from that time forward. Now that her chemo is over she is even able to take many of the capsules and tablet supplements she had been on previously. We are gradually seeing improvements in her strength, physically and mentally.

What is so special about this ‘Super Fruit’ supplement? It contributes to fighting cancer and other disease.

  • Black currant, bilberry, blueberry, cranberry, elderberry, red and white grapes
  • Builds immunity
  • Improves brain function and memory
  • Protects the heart, brain, eyes and urinary tract
  • Green tea – slows mental aging, improves prostate, breast and heart health
  • Acai berry – super antioxidant protection
  • Pomegranate – slows mental aging, improves heart health and reduces oxidative damage
  • The above fruits provide 2 important protective nutrients:
  • Resveratrol
  • Cardiovascular protection
  • Genetic protection
  • Anti-aging potential
  • Alpha-lipoic acid, a powerful water and fat soluble antioxidant
  • Regenerates vitamins C and E
  • Reduces oxidative stress

What would you do if you had cancer? What would you do if your doctor only gave you 3 months to live?

Cancer-Mama-MeI will tell you what I would do. I would do exactly what my Mama did.

  • I would pray for the faith, strength and wisdom to live the rest of my life for God’s Glory.
  • I would use the knowledge God has given me to nourish my body with the super nutrients He has provided from food and science.
  • I would seek the best medical advice and best medicine science has made available for my type of cancer.

Why did I share Mama’s cancer story?

  • It is an amazing story of her faith
  • It shows the power of ‘Super Nutrition’ in a compromised immune system
  • Works with chemo
  • Amazed doctors and medical professionals
  • There is hope for anyone with cancer beyond surgery, chemo, and radiation

Such great news! And thank you for sharing how important nutrition and supplements as an integral part of treatment.

8 Pat Moon July 31, 2014 at 11:16 am

Hi A Lynn,

Thanks for reading our great news and your supportive comment. It is always amazing to me when people believe they can take the medical treatment for cancer without consideration of nutrition and supplementation.

Take care.

Thanks for sharing your mom's powerful story.  Her faith and resilience teach us all a lesson.  And her use of supplements gives us a lot to think about.

16 Pat Moon July 25, 2014 at 11:12 am

Hi Gina,

Yes, my mother’s story has many lessons of faith, resillience, power and nutrition. I would like to add attitude to the list as well. She has such an amazing attitude. She never complains about anything. She never has. I know people cannot say that about me yet I have a strong desire to be like her. Perhaps I will accomplish that if I make it to age 93!

Thanks for your nice comment.

You are so amazing and kudos to oyur mama for her bravery! I'm happy that you are still together enjoying life. Thanks for sharing this! We can only give up on life if we decide to, I guess. Your mama will inspire more to fight and have faith and keep on going!

20 Pat Moon July 25, 2014 at 11:04 am

Hi Rochefel,

Thank you and, yes, my mama is a very brave woman. She is only a bit over 5 feet tall and now actually weighs 110 pounds which is the most she has ever weighed but she is mighty in so many other ways. Her entire life has been an inspiration to many over the years. We are so thankful that she has the inspiration and faith to keep going.

You said it so well.

21 Meryl Hershey Beck July 23, 2014 at 2:46 pm

What an inspiring story. I agree that proper nutrition can do things for our bodies that even the most advanced and modern science can not do alone.  Our bodies are stronger than we often realize and feeding our bodies with great nutrition and supplements can help our bodies heal. Your mother is living proof.

22 Pat Moon July 25, 2014 at 10:59 am

Thanks, Meryl.

Yes, my mother is living proof that feeding our bodies with great nutrition and great supplements can help our bodies heal and fight major diseases like cancer.

Your supportive comment is appreciated.

25 Carele Belanger July 23, 2014 at 2:16 pm

Thank you for sharing your mom's story. Also, yes I truly believe in natural juice supplements

26 Pat Moon July 25, 2014 at 10:52 am

Hi Carele,

Glad you liked my mother’s story.

The supplements my mother takes are not just natural juice. They are whole food supplements. There is a huge difference in just the juice and the whole food approach. I wanted to clarify that point.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

27 Beverley Golden July 23, 2014 at 1:46 pm

Thanks for sharing your mom's story, as I truly believe that that generation have such incredibly strong wills and belief, that they continue to astound us all, regardless of what the experts might say is possible.  Personally you have to go with the person's wishes, although I know for myself, having been through so many traditional medical diagnoses, that I would opt for a much more alternative route back to health and well-being. So happy your mom is still with you and enjoying life!

28 Pat Moon July 25, 2014 at 10:48 am

Hi Beverley,

It is true that the generation our mother’s are from has given them incredibly strong wills and beliefs. I definintely had reservations all the way through this cancer journey of whether to go along with the sweet oncologists suggestions. Once I met her oncologist, I did have more respect for her suggestions for treatment. She was not pushy but very gentle and encouraging to my mother. My mother grew to trust her over the past 2 1/2 years.

As I said in the article, I would definitely use the quality nutritional supplementation and would probably beef it up as we did with my mother even if I chose to also go with traditional medicine. I have to respect them and there has been many improvements with medical treatments in the past several years. However, I will never leave out nutrition and its effect and contribution.

I so appreciate your nice supportive comment.

29 Susan Schiller July 23, 2014 at 12:55 pm

As your family's growing testimony proves beyond a doubt, good supplementation brings vitality and lengevity. And that means more time with your beloved mama!

I'm so happy you provide us with updates, Pat, and I'm so glad to hear your mama continues to feel well, even well enough to use chemo when needed. 🙂

30 Pat Moon July 25, 2014 at 10:36 am

Yes, Susan, good supplementation has contributed to more time for our family to enjoy my mama. We enjoy her so much. She has such a joyful, happy attitude and is full of fun, witty remarks that keep us all smiling. The chemo almost took that way but it has come back now that we are finished with chemo.

Mama is such a blessing to our family.

Thanks for reading and commenting.
